In this assignment I chose to design the antagonist of a retelling of Snow White.
Two popstars had fought with each other for their popularity since they had enter the industry. One is known to be the 'Angel' of the field, the other is known to be the 'Dark Mistress' but in secret they yearn for each other roles. The Angel want to be mischievous and the Mistress want to be kind. However, both feel as if they would lose earthing if they step away from those roles. Angel have to be kind and Mistress have to be fearsome, no matter what their heart yearn for. At least, that's what Mila will make sure of.
The inspiration for this character is the question "What if the Magic Mirror was the true evil?" I believe this simple question can lead to such a complexed and interesting story due to how 'beauty' is such the a subjective concept, and only being value as 'The fairest of them all' can cause such a fear of losing the only value one ever had. The idea of the very mirror that caused Snow White and Evil Queen to fight in the first place, being the true evil that manipulate young girls who grow up to be the next queen is intriguing to me. Plus, I believe that it's important to acknowledge this problem in our society. Beauty being a fleeting phase is one thing in life that is ineffable yet we all try so hard to hold on to it because one reason or another. And, the industry of any kind constantly take advantage of us by using this to manipulate us. Mila, the embodiment of this universe Magic Mirror and the industry, is the character that exist to be someone for the viewers to see and recognize the toxicity that he'll bring if we let him.
As an homage to the inspiration of this character, Snow White (1937) by Disney, the character is based on Disney Renaissance era (1900's - early 2000's) which was heavily inspired by drag queens. I want to recreate those type of aesthetic which were one of what made Disney so iconic.
